Hello?! Wake Up! by Rose
People's hypocrisy and lack of consideration for others knows no bounds. Aaron's previous editorial of "Your Word Is Your What?" actually gave me the idea of expounding upon this very idea. I can count on less than one hand the number of friends who actually reciprocate or initiate anything with me. It's not so much the lack of initiation that bothers me however; it's the idea that they assume they are such a good friend of mine and then apparently just don't give a damn when it boils right down to it. For better or worse, I am the type of individual that tries to go out of my way to express the love I have for my friends; it pleases me and makes me feel good to know that whatever I'm doing for them, be it buying them a little something, sending them an email, or spending time with them, it's making them happy.
And then, with the exception of a very precious few, I get the short end of the stick, or no damn stick at all. My mother always used to tell me, "Friendship is a two-way street. If they're not holding up their side of the street, then to hell with them." Up until recently I've put up with it-until I was basically slapped in the face and forced to ask myself, "Wow...hey, you've done a hell of a lot for this person the entire time you're known them...what have they done for you lately?" Spent time with you? Bought dinner every once in a while? Called you? Remembered the little and big things? Well I'll be damned...the answer to those questions is no, no, no, no, and no. Re-evaluation time! I've come to the conclusion that if you've lived your life and you have maybe one or two true friends, you are blessed.
"You don't get something for nothing, turn back. Mmm...gotta try a little harder."
