Who're You Fooling? by Aaron
I always laugh when someone is recounting some incident (usually recent), and apparently in order to impress me, they talk louder when saying the name of a person they hung out with in order to emphasize that they're proud of having hung out with this person. Because he's cool. Or was. In high school! So, you hung out with somebody who was cool in school? Yeah, school's over. This situation arises most often in hachie and I've known most people there between 4-10 years. If you think not-so-subtly dropping the name of someone who was popular 2 years ago will change my impression of you, go fuck yourself.
Quit trying to make people think you have a life through your AIM away messages. No one needs to know your entire day's schedule including the times and unique numbers of your classes. The only people who need those kinds of specifics are stalkers. Prominently displaying your numerous activities throughout the day doesn't mean you have a life. It means you took the time before your oh-so-busy day to sit down and tell the world what you'd be doing for the next seven hours, and that's just sad. I tend to go with delightfully vague song quotes or obscure, random blurbs that no one really understands, because if you needed to know where I was you'd have my cell phone number, right? And if you can't get a hold of me it's because I choose that. That's the idea behind being away. I've also noticed that people try to give the impression that they have friends through their away messages. Quit it! If you have friends, people will get that impression on their own.
These are just examples of a bigger trend of stupid, superficial behavior. People who do these and similar things are apparently not familiar with the concept of the looking-glass self image. Basically, you see yourself as you IMAGINE others see you. This points directly to big insecurities and self-consciousness. Read Cooley's bit on the subject and watch Fight Club. Then maybe you won't fucking brag about who you got drunk with.
