Patriotism & Fitch by Aaron
I think enough time has elapsed for me to be able to broach this subject without being lynched in the name of freedom.
I'm tired of this patriotic trend. I really didn't think it'd take this long for hostility to dissention to subside but blind zealots are abundant in America. I thought American flags and clever pro-US anti-osama stickers were abundant in Austin. Then I came back to Hachie. So far the most annoying is "Yo Mama, Osama." God, that's clever.
I don't even know where to begin to cover this subject. Criticism of the government was THE thing to do before September, but now it gets you dirty looks and resentment from all types of people. Now, suggesting that US middle-eastern policies have been a little bit questionable is made to sound like treason. These fucking retards don't even blink when someone warns that we're trading civil liberties for supposed security. They say "Shutup, I love this country!" Yeah. Good point, asshole. Loving your country means supporting what's best for your country, and not questioning the actions of our government is NOT supporting what's best here. The situation is entirely too cut & dry for me. It seems no one is familiar with the term "scapegoat." As long as Osama is running loose we have unity. We have cohesion. We have an ignorant and stupid public that will accept anything the military and government tell them. Osama has become the object of our hatred, our focus. Why do you think it's been 3 months and they haven't caught him? I used to think they'd let this drag out for at least 6 months but I tend to think they'll wrap it up soon. That's because they've got a few new scapegoats lined up. Saddam, watch your ass.
I received a forward that made me furious to read. It was supposed to make me feel triumphant and confident and American, but it just makes me want to scream at the wisened, blind old Missourrite who wrote it. The text is located here. Please peruse it and take notice especially of his responses to the 10% and the way he tries to enrage you with the stories of murdered babies and what not.
I'd sooner take the professor's word over this guy's. He's probably more knowledgable of politics than this old gasbag from Missourri. The fact is we have been Imperialistic and our middle-eastern policies have been incredibly one-sided and arrogant. Britain gave Palestine the shaft in 1948 and we've sided with Israel ever since. We have military bases right next to their holy land that we use to attack an Arab and very Muslim nation. That's like UT establishing a campus in college station and not expecting any trouble. Our intentions were "good" as we see them, but essentially we were just protecting our oil interests, not saving an innocent, defenseless little country from the big mean Iraq. And why do you think we've been so one-sided with the Palestine/Israel conflict? Christianity originated with Jews in Israel, and something like 85% of Americans consider themselves Christian. Muslims have been at war with Christians and Jews for thousands of years, so naturally, we side with those that we have the most in common with. Also, even though there are like a billion and a half Muslims in the world, they've all been stereotyped as terrorists. Granted, Hamas is a bunch of Palestinian terrorists, but they don't represent the majority by any means. We gave Israel enough jets, guns, and anti-tank weapons to hold off invasions from three Arab countries AT THE SAME TIME. That's quite an investment. Everyone needs to quit denying that we had a hand in what happened to us. Ever been beat up for no reason? No. Because there's always a reason.
I hate Jesse Jackson too, but he's at least got the balls to voice his concern over how rapidly they're throwing civil liberties out the door. Secret military tribunals? Suspects being held and not charged? I understand these are extreme circumstances but come on! Dissention is what founded the motherfucking country you're so devoted to, Mr. Duncan. If we don't question the government's motives and actions then what's the point of having a democracy? I'm not naive enough to think the country works like they say it does in my government textbook, but apparently most people are simply just that feeble. I'm glad that a solid 10% of the country is skeptical of the US's recent activities. I wish it was closer to 30 in fact.
What does this guy think that all liberal college students are upper-middle class prep school graduates that roll around in beemers? It's overall the opposite. Rich people more often have more conservative kids. Ever been to Baylor? Yeah, Berkeley's different but that's San Francisco. How can anyone use that as a model for the status quo of liberal college kids? I hate how anyone middle-aged an over doesn't need to hear anyone's voice but their own. They assume that with time and wisdom we'll all come to agree with them. No logic, no proof, no reasonable arguments. We're just wrong. "The wisdom of age should fear the strength of youth." Not to mention the intelligence. We haven't as much experience but we have 10 times your idealism and at least as much intelligence. Throw in the sheer audacity of 20 year olds and you're in for quite an argument.
I love how his solution is deportation. Such a brilliant plan. Yes, let's deport those who speak out based on their opinions. That way we can preserve the land of the fucking FREE, you stupid son of a bitch. It boggles the mind that someone whose heart is in the right place could have such backward thinking. He thinks he's being patriotic and supporting Dubya but he's just one more person who wouldn't notice if this country actually did turn into a police state. I guess middle-aged crackers in the midwest don't have to deal much with racial profiling. He also says not to feel sorry for Afghanistan, as if they caused us all this trouble. Keep in mind that the people in New York had it pretty good up until the point they died. Afghanistan's been fucked up pretty much since the dawn of time. It's been overrun by hordes of all types, most recently US and British marines and special forces. The guy says that we're defending our way of life by killing Afghanis. Holy shit. So much of his stuff is so blatantly stupid I don't even need to bother contradicting it.
This is the general consensus among Americans. Someone contradicts what George says and good ol 'mericans don't even offer up logical arguments or back their opinions up with information, they just call you a fascist. Notice that the guy calls the prof a fascist idiot. Let's think about this... he's angry at the guy for his extreme left wing views, when fascism is as far to the right as it gets. Good comeback, Gene. I see far too many people arguing in this way and not only as it relates to the terrorist situation. People are too insecure to withstand the questioning of their beliefs, so they start namecalling. That's an awful habit.
Take this all with a grain of salt and realize I'm playing devil's advocate to a certain extent. I'm not for letting Osama and everybody slide by any means but I just wanted to point out the flaws in the logic of the US government and the swarms of maniacs who back anything the government does. I could continue on the subject, but my patience runs thin and it's doubtful most peoples' attention spans have made it this far anyway. If you're offended by any of this, prove me wrong. I look forward to it.
