Starcraft - Expansion Tips
Have you ever played with somebody who smartly expands early but wastes 20 minutes and thousands of minerals building towers? I've learned that yelling "you FUCKING idiot!!" is a great way to lose allies, so i don't say anything. People will expand in the corner of an island map and build a dozen towers that never fire a shot. The main point here is that you need to prioritize your expansions by efficiency. If you'll spend more money on defending it with troops and towers than you'll actually be able to mine, then don't choose that for your first expansion. Strategic expansions are a great thing but not early when you need money.
Now, for all you numbskulls that play nothing but BGH games vs the computer where you never even have to expand, you may stop reading at this point. Otherwise continue. On larger maps you often have the choice of choosing a little out-of-the-way mine off in a corner somewhere or you have a "natural" expansion. Take these first! Then once you have a considerable income (and I assume you're building troops the entire time) you can go for an exp in the center of the map, or one that blocks your enemy in. A few towers are necessary for detection nowadays, esp with the advent of dt's and lurkers, so position them for maximum coverage. Go all out on a strategic base though. Surround it with men and towers and use it as a jumping off point for attacks. These can be the deciding factors in long games. If you know how to position your men and reinforcements don't have to go halfway across the map, you can prevent your opponent's expanding. Ranged units on elevated bases massacre ground troops. I'm not sure of the percentage, but units attacking up a cliff do considerably reduced damage (if they can see you at all).
I know this isn't too specific so just use your judgment.
