Starcraft - Overlord Hunting
Kevin Waskow originally presented this idea and I expanded on it to try to make it more effective. Props to Big K.
Aside from cracklings, this is the most annoying thing in the entire game of starcraft. Once you get into the mid-game level, a zerg player has excess overlords, and little for them to do. Nobody has time to set patrol routes for all of their lords, so people have a tendency to crowd them behind their main. The trick to this is it's easier to get in there if the victim's base isn't in a corner. However it's easier to slaughter them if you can get into a corner base, because they have nowhere to go.
Recently I played a 1v1 on regular ol Hunters, and we were at opposite corners (he was at 10:30). I went for a small drop consisting of 4 dragoons, 3 dt's and a templar, just to piss him off. He already had a hive, if that reflects the point we had reached in the game, and had a buttload of lords crammed into the rear of his base. While my other units were dealing with adrenalings & sunkens, I got off 3 psi's on the cluster of overlords behind his peon line, and being in a corner, they just kept trying to cram further up in there. My HT had app. 20 kills, and i snatched him and the sole surviving goon and took off.
This little maneuver elicited a big "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" from my opponent. I doubt I've ever pissed someone off so effectively when playing starcraft. He spent the next 5 minutes building lords and whining what a cheap move it was, and i spent that time moving dragoons into position to finish him off.
It should be noted that corsairs make this very easy for protoss. Scattering some d-webs then dropping is very nice, and the corsairs can finish off wounded lords.
Now i have to adapt this for zerg and terran. While i RECOMMEND dropping troops to distract the defenses, it's not necessary, esp for terran.
Terran: Terrans have no very efficient way of doing this but it can be done. Grab 2-4 sci vessels. Cast about 3-4 irradiates on random o-lords, then cast irradiate on 1 or more sci vessels. Pull the remaining vess's out and run the little glowing balls of death thru the crowd. This isnt as effective as psi storm but it works nicely. Also, if you have the resources, send a formation of valks in there. They'll quickly finish off all the wounded ones. Once you've killed a substantial amount, salvage your guys and pull back.
Zerg: It's difficult to pull this off as zerg, but here are a couple ideas. The first is a defiler. Basically just run a few empty lords in there for distraction, then drop one in back with a pair of defilers. One plague spell should cover most of them but two is best. Wait a while for the plague to bring the lords' hit points down really low, then move in with the devs. A few shots and most of them will be gone. This way has to be done very smoothly, because once he catches on, he'll start moving the lord out. The second way to do this is massed massed scourges. This is a mid-game tactic, but it's difficult to do it effectively. Scourges have a tendency to over-kill. Sometimes twice as many as necessary will kill what they're attacking. Bring them in in groups of 3-4 and dont tell them specifically which ones to attack. Following up with devs is a good idea too. If you're brave and well-coordinated, it's possible to combine these tactics. Bring in scourges with devs after the plague, and maybe throw in an ensnare so they dont get away.
Remember when trying any of these strategies, you only get one shot at it, unless you're playing against a total dipshit. If he sees what you're trying to do, he'll surround himself with towers. So be prepared. I'm sure there're other ways to execute this, so be creative. And remember to try to use some kind of spell of mass-destruction (they work best).
To keep from falling victim to this attack, spread your lords out so one spell won't wipe them out.
