The most underappreciated unit in the game. I personally hadn't produced one in months until recently. They have several purposes though, the first of which is they're great anti-infantry, no matter what species you're against. I think they deal explosive damage which makes it really shitty against mechanical units. Spider mines do full damage though. They're also cheap, dont require gas, and build quickly. Also, they deal full damage against protoss shields, so you can run them in there to weaken enemy troops, then pull out. The second best use for vultures i've found is basic support, e.g. sticking them near bunkers, having them escort or run point for advancing infantry, etc. They have few hit points but having them fire and retreat shortly works great against zealots. The main purpose for vultures, however, is their recon abilities. They're ridiculously fast with the ion thruster upgrade; I've slipped half a dozen of them THROUGH a full row of cannons only losing 2. Spider mines also serve as great recon and anti-infantry. If you build a few vultures early on and research mines, you can be forewarned of an attack, and take out a few of them in the process. I'll get a screen of using them for a defensive distraction (I'm usually occupied when this is implemented). Get a row of about 8-10 spider mines just inside the firing range of your bunkers. If a group of enemies come running in there, the mines will pop up and the baddies will immediately prioritize and shoot at them. If you've positioned them well, your tanks and bunkers (and vultures) have been slaughtering them all the while, and a few mines might actually hit their targets. If not used for a tactic mentioned and maybe a few others, vultures are actually useless. I've come across people who were obsessed with them and they got their asses kicked. In case you get overconfident with these guys, just remember their 20 damage is reduced to about 4 vs mechanical units. |
