Hive :: Devious Methods
Released: 1998. London Records.

This album won't blow your mind necessarily, but I definitely think Hive is among the few artists keeping the drum & bass genre alive. Next to Endtroducing, I've probably listened to Devious Methods more than any other d&b album. The rhythms are wicked, especially on Inside the Hive and Ultrasonic Sound. The latter is a mix of stuttered beats and a guitar riff from a Bad Brains song with samples thrown in for fun.

There is an abundance of good samples and the variety of the tracks is enough to hold your attention throughout the disc. The songs go from brutally quick beats and bass lines to slow, phat/eerie mixes. This guy's got his shit together.

Hive is rekindling my interest in the genre. So much of my attention has been diverted by rock and metal that it's really something when a jungle DJ catches my ear. Guys like Hive and Shadow always manage to pull me back in when I've been led astray.
